Games like Runescape
Well firstly what is Runescape? Runescape fits into a gaming category called MMORPG which is an acronym for Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. The most distinguishing feature about Runescape is that there arent many online games like it. Runescape is a browser based game that is played for free by the majority of its players. It was created back in 2001 and was a relatively new entrant on the scene of MMO games. It has a fantasy setting like most other online MMO games that is adventure based with loads of quests to complete and skills to develop.
So are there any other online games like Runescape?
Well there arent a lot of online games like Runescape, but there sure are a lot of similar online RPG games out there in the market. Many of these games can be purchased from your local game stores or downloaded form the internet. They include titles like World of Warcraft, Guild Wars, Star Wars Galaxies, Everquest II, Lineage II, Final Fantasy XI, Maple Story and Silkroad Online are all a couple of good options. Though you should keep in mind many of these games arent like Runescape because they either charge a monthly fee to be played or arent browser based, rather need to be installed on your computer to be played.
Why is it hard to find online games just like Runescape?
Well there are two main things about Runescape that really make it quite unique. One it is utterly free to play. Sure it isnt the complete version but a large proportion of the game is free to play and gives you an eternity of great game play and enjoyment out of a free game. Secondly there arent any other online games like Runescape because it is completely browser based. Meaning that you dont need to buy the game in a store or download some 700MB file and install it on your computer to play it. It is all played online with your browser with your character and your stats, items and gold all saved on the Runescape servers. Another thing that is hard to find in other online games that Runescape has is the sheer number of people that play it. It is one of the most popular online RPGs with over 100,000 simultaneous players playing the game at any one moment.
Most Popular Alternative Online Games
Whilst there arent any games exactly like Runescape a few of the popular alternatives were mentioned above, including World of Warcraft which is by far the most popular MMORPG online at the moment with over 8 million subscribers. So if you are after a popular alternative to Runescape, and you dont mind paying a monthly fee, then World of Warcraft would be your best option. If you are after a free online game, Guild Wars is a good option if you are willing to buy the actual game first, meaning you pay for the game in a store but there is no on going monthly subscription payment. If you are looking for a completely free alternative you might like to try something like Maple Story, this is a very popular free alternative.

I dont understand it? I mean I think it is a sad state of affairs when hundreds of people are searching for runescape 2 hacks and cheats instead of searching for things like runescape 2 help or forums where they can go to site like the forum I run, Runescape Boards, and get good quality help that will not only be loads more reliable but also wont get your banned and all things considered will probably earn you a lot more Runescape gold along the way.
Make Runescape Gold the Right Way
The main reason Im writing this guide is for all those out there attempting to find great free Runescape 2 cheats, which unfortunately dont exist - like the runescape 2 stat changer (there has never been a Runescape 2 hack like this, if people are claiming they can change stats it is just a scam). So I’m here to say that there is a much better and smarter way to play Runescape, and it involves playing the game for fun with dedication. If you combine these with a bit of intelligence on time management you will have a wonderful character and loads of Runescape Gold and items in your account in no time. Take this advice from someone who has been playing and involved with the game for over 5 years. Just remember that all these short term methods of making gold also only last in the short term because sooner or later your character will get banned and all your gold will be lost. If you play smart and often you will make all the Runescape Gold you can dream of and you will have made it the right way and it will be yours to keep. Good luck.

The browser-based MMOG sector is far larger than I had realized, and more titles are targeting younger audiences
Back in June, I ran a two-part Focus article on web-based MMOGs. Although I had been aware of this sector for a number of years, I had been glancing at it from time to time rather than watching it consistently. So, the background research I did for the piece turned out to be not just interesting, but also enlightening in terms of how many titles are out there and how popular some have become.
It’s a broad category, as demonstrated by the fact that two experts who agreed to share their perspectives represented quite different types of offerings. Part 1 featured Maid Marian Entertainment principal Gene Endrody, creator of the Shockwave-based Sherwood Dungeon, which has accumulated some 1.5 million accounts despite very limited exposure in game publication. In Part 2, we heard from Lars Koschin, who heads up the US office of Gameforge. This company, which develops and operates various browser-based titles such as Ikariam and OGame, states that it has 10 million active users.
In looking at their games and many others, it was readily apparent that I hadn’t kept up very well. Sure, RPG Vault has covered a few releases, and I knew of others. However, the segment as a whole turned out to be much larger and far more popular than I had realized. Naturally, I’m trying to catch up my awareness, and also to set up more coverage. One piece that’s coming soon is a Q&A on RuneScape, which has largely flown below the radar in terms of visibility, but is generally regarded as number two in terms of subscriber count with about a million.
And considering the titles mentioned above are less than the proverbial tip of the iceberg, there’s much, much more out there to learn about. So, I’m looking forward to presenting more frequent coverage over the coming weeks and months as I bring myself at least a little closer to being up to speed.
MMOGs for younger users
Last Friday’s column included some personal comments on the Austin GDC, which I had just returned from the day before. As mentioned therein, MMOGs targeting younger users was a focus at the event, both in various formal presentations and as a frequent topic of conversation. This was largely expected, especially the former since the session schedule was available beforehand. Consequently, I was able to arrange for a feature on this topic area. Part 1 is up today, with observations from representatives of KingsIsle’s Wizard101 and Gaia Online. Part 2, which is scheduled for next week, will feature a co-founder of Meteor Games, which is currently working on Twin Skies; the company’s principals previous endeavor was Neopets.
Many of the projects in this area have a major are socially oriented component, so they’re not “traditional” MMOGs with the kinds and mix of content that term implies. There’s also a connection to the topic above since quite a number are web-based. These factors and others have contributed to lower overall visibility for this segment too. However, even hardcore gamers may want to pay it some more attention.
Why? Well, a major reason is that games for kids and youths can also be fun for other age groups. With more of them coming, the likelihood of finding one (or more) you’ll enjoy is growing. It’s easy to sit back and tell yourself you’re a serious online gamer who only plays traditional releases. The same “reasoning can be used to justify not looking at so-called casual MMOGs, web-based ones, etc. But if the result is not trying releases that you’d enjoy, whether regularly or occasionally, this attitude becomes self-defeating. As always, I encourage you to make informed choices as to what you’ll play.
